INs and OUTs OF BINDING

INS AND OUTS OF BINDING

There are many methods of binding. I will include a number of different ways here to help you see the differences in teaching, style, etc.

This is a great QUICK overview. A couple of minutes to get an idea of the process. (Other videos will show LONGER and more detailed instructions on mitering the corners, joining your binding for a nice finish, machine finish vs. a hand finish, etc.)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGO...

EASIEST and EASY TO UNDERSTAND:  Nancy (not sure how the last name is spelled... I think Roelfsema?) Not to be confused with the "other" Nancy Zieman...  THIS Nancy has the ON POINT series which is by far and away the BEST instruction for free.  Here is her binding technique:  https://youtu.be/knzUVjrNnu8

Nancy Zieman (Nancy’s Notions) from the Wisconsin PBS Show “Sewing With Nancy” (has been on air for about 40 years or so) Love her simplicity... Nicely done binding with a “steam a seam” joining to finish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcV...

Laura Coia of “SewVeryEasy” Always has some great tips as well. A walking foot is NOT used in this video, but she has a neat trick to help your machine over the bulk of the fabric if you have not yet acquired a walking foot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8q...

Aunt Marti from 52 Quilts in 52 Weeks does an awesome tutorial with “Susie’s Magic Binding” The appearance of this binding looks like you did a lot more work than you actually do! A Flange binding (French for some people, and it is also a vehicle if you feel adventurous and want to do some cording) I love her method of mitering by angling off the edge and then returning to the stitching after making the miter fold. I also love the connection of the ending of the binding. I do this will regular binding as well. It eliminates hand stitching or in the case of the fusible in Nancy’s Video, the chance of the binding pulling apart during the process.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8N6nv90H2c&t=843s

Tutorials would not be complete without Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilt Company! This is another take on the “Flanged” binding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAQ...

Lastly you will need to have some information in case you decide to finish your quilt with something awesome like scallops or prairie points:

Kathy Seal from “The Quilt Patch”. She give some great basic fabric info. Bias binding for your scallops.. this is a bit confusing in concept, but not hard. You just have to follow carefully! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws7...

A second alternative to this method is by Marian Drain.  Two part YouTube tutorial for your bias binding.  Very easy to understand.
Part 1 Continous Bias Binding
Part 2 Continous Bias Binding

Carolyn Wainscott is like everyone’s mom (or for you youngsters, grandma) Love her accent. She is affiliated with FaveQuilts. Prairie Points make a beautiful finish to your project. And they are not as hard as you would think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25f...
